Makerere University is the oldest and premier University in Uganda. Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious English Universities in Africa. The University transitioned from Faculty-based to collegiate system on 1st July 2011 and as at 1st July 2014, has 10 Constituent Colleges including the School of Law, all operating as semi-autonomous units of the University. College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS)
The College of Natural Sciences is one of the 10 constituent of Makerere University has the mandate to teach and research in the basic sciences, namely biochemistry, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, zoology and sports science, which are foundations for the applied sciences. The College has 1233 undergraduate and 120 graduate registered students (2017/18??). CoNAS also services students from the colleges of Education, Business & Economics, Engineering & Design and Health Sciences thereby providing foundations for the applied sciences offered throughout the University.

Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences
The department offers a broad range of courses in animal sciences, as well as utilisation of animal resources for the benefit and welfare of mankind. The courses offered by the department fall within the fields of genetics, animal, plant physiology, insect and fish, Entomology, Parasitology and Natural resources conservation. Graduates of the department become skilled at playing important roles in the study and improvement of animal production, public health and food safety, conservation of biodiversity including genetic and wildlife resources, fisheries and aquaculture. GIS and bioinformatics training, data collection and analysis, computer literacy and communication skills. The department has four flagship programmes: Bachelor of Science (Major or Minor in Zoology); Bachelor of Fisheries and Aquaculture; Master of Science in Zoology (one of the specialisations is Fisheries and Aquaculture); and a PhD in Zoology with a track to specialise in Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Master of Science in Zoology (Option: Fisheries and Aquaculture)
The two-year full-time programme of study consisting of two parts: coursework and research projects, each lasting at least twelve months. The programme aims at imparting knowledge and skill to designing and implementing a scientific research in aquatic ecosystem to ensure sustainable aquatic resources utilisation and management.
Admission requirements: Local and international candidates should have a minimum of lower second class degree in Zoology, Agriculture, Veterinary, Education (Science), Environmental Science and other related science subjects from recognised Universities.
Programme Structure: the program is run on a semester system involving lectures, practical, field training, tutorials, seminars, field visits in Year 1 and examinable research thesis. The courses in Table below are delivered and written in English. The pass mark is 60% of which progressive assessment contribute 40% of the final result awarded per course while the written exam contributes 60%.
PhD in Zoology (Aquatic Systems, Fisheries, Aquaculture)
The three-year programme provides in depth knowledge and skills for students to develop innovative approaches in aquatic ecosystem for clean and sustainable aquatic resources utilisation and management
Admission requirements: Local and international candidates should have a Master of Science Degree in Zoology, Agriculture, Veterinary, Education (Science), Environmental Science and other related science subjects from recognised Universities.
Programme Structure: the program is run on a semester system. In Year I students undertake mandatory Cross-cutting Courses (Table below) managed by School of Graduate Studies. The pass mark is 60% of which progressive assessment contributes 40% of the final result awarded per course while the written exam contributes 60%. The cross-cutting courses run on a modular basis with each course offered each year, delivery in form of didactic lectures, with the major part devoted to practical, tutorials and problem based seminars. The core courses are a requirement for all PhD students. The maximum semester load is 18 CU and the minimum program load is 24 CU. In years II - III, students conduct research and write dissertation and are examined.

Services for International Students and Exchange Staff at Makerere University
The International Relations Office is responsible for promoting international activities at the university especially student activities. Our visitors are particularly important as they contribute to internationalization which is a key pillar of the University’s Vision and Strategic Plan. They bring experiences from their universities and take experiences of Makerere back to their universities. The office works in liaison with the Academic Registrar and Dean of Students’ offices.
The Office is responsible for receiving and welcoming international visitors to the university and making programmes for their visit. It also handles accommodation reservations in major hotels and in guest houses in and around town. Associate Professor with teaching and research interests in the management of pests and disease vectors, biodiversity assessments (utilising invertebrates), and in the utilization of beneficial insects, particularly apiculture (beekeeping). DR. GLADYS NAMUSWE BWANIKA, BSc. MSc., PhD (Mak)
She is involved in research activities with the areas of fish Biology, ecology, food and feeding. She is interested in Fish bioenergetics; Fish ageing (otoliths) and growth modelling; Water quality and eutrophication of lake systems; Culture of Zooplanktons e.g. Rotifer, Branchionus calyciflorus as potential starter fish feed.
DR. SAMUEL MUGISHA, BSc. MSc., PhD (Mak)
He is a specialist in the application of remote sensing (RS) and GIS technologies for land use-planning, environmental analysis and natural resources management. He is also interested in areas of Ecological Geography and Project Planning and Management
DR. EGONYU JAMES PETER (BSc-Agric., MSc-Crop Sc., PhD)
James teaches insect morphology, biology and chemical ecology. James’ current research interests lie in the development of environmentally friendly strategies of managing crop insect pests, generation of climate change adaptation crop production approaches and conservation and harnessing of biodiversity in cropping ecosystems.
DR. RONALD PAUL DDUMBA SEMYALO, B.Sc, MSc., PhD
Ronald Semyalo is a Limnologist, teaching and research experience in Hydrobiology, non-conventional use of aquatic resources, Biostatistics and Advanced Fish population dynamics; cyanobacteria with emphasis on proliferation and impacts on ecology and society; water quality analysis and monitoring; domestic and industrial water abstraction, aquaculture and ecosystem protection as well as zooplankton and phytoplankton diversity.
DR. PETER AKOLL, BSc. MSc., PhD
Peter Akoll is an Aquatic Ecologist, with research interest in Aquatic microbiology, Parasitology, Aquatic Animal Health mainly Fish diseases, and Limnology. His research activities focuses on understanding biological interactions especially host–pathogen relationships, influence of the environmental conditions on the aquatic disease epidemiology, pathogens’ (bacteria and parasites), diversity, distribution and population dynamics; pathogenicity or virulence and host susceptibility to climate/environmental change and variability as well as developing rapid diagnostic tools.
